What a great evening at the AGC Seattle/Northern District Member Social! It was fantastic to see members come together last Thursday (8/13) for networking, conversation, and a little friendly competition on the bowling lanes at the Mill Creek Arena Sports. As Seattle begins work on its next budget, elected leaders have signaled support for new revenue measures, including a municipal capital gains tax and a possible expansion of the city's JumpStart payroll expense tax. According to discussions among business and civic leaders, both proposals could emerge as policymakers look for ways to address a significant city budget shortfall.

Why AGC Members Should Care
While neither proposal is aimed specifically at the construction industry, both could affect the business environment in which contractors, developers, and investors operate.
A local capital gains tax could increase the tax burden on entrepreneurs, investors, and owners of closely held businesses when they sell assets or ownership interests. Expansion of the JumpStart payroll tax could increase employment costs for firms with highly compensated employees. Together, these policies may influence business investment decisions, capital availability, company growth strategies, and Seattle's competitiveness relative to neighboring jurisdictions.

AGC is monitoring developments closely and engaging with coalition partners to better understand the potential impacts on the construction industry.
