2022 Outlook: Building to New Heights?
AGC of America WebEd: Jan. 19 from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. ET
Building construction appears to have bottomed out in mid-2021 and has begun to top year-earlier levels. But the industry still faces multiple challenges: elevated materials costs and selected shortages, extended and uncertain delivery times, shrunken labor availability. How will these conditions change in 2022? Register now (complimentary for AGC members) to hear AGC’s chief economist Ken Simonson's answers to these questions for building contractors from AGC's 2022 Hiring and Business Outlook Survey, along with his own predictions.

Supreme Court considers OSHA's COVID vax-or test mandate
Decision limited to addressing removal of nationwide stay
(AGC of America) On January 7, the Supreme Court will hear oral argument on whether or not the Sixth Circuit Court was correct when it decided on December 17, 2021, to remove the nationwide stay (freeze) of the OSHA COVID-19 vaccination-or-testing emergency temporary standard (ETS).
A decision from the Supreme Court on whether to reinstate the stay or not could be issued at any time after January 7 and will not go to the merits of the ETS, meaning litigation will continue after this decision. A decision reinstating the stay could alter OSHA’s implementation and enforcement plans, which—at this moment—specifically include that OSHA will not issue citations for noncompliance with any requirements of the OSHA ETS before January 10, 2022; and that OSHA will not issue citations for noncompliance with testing requirements before February 9, 2022. Five-step plan for employers as CDC reduces
COVID-19 isolation, quarantine periods

(AGC of America) In response to the ongoing Omicron wave of COVID-19 cases, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently updated its guidance to reduce, in most instances, both the length of time an individual must isolate after contracting COVID-19, and the quarantine period for those exposed to the illness. While it may be a good sign the CDC believes shorter periods are appropriate due to the prevalence of milder Omicron cases, this new guidance doesn’t come without complexities.

Reflection and the road to recovery
(Construction Business Owner) As the world celebrates the joyful beginning of a new year, the construction industry is looking hard to the future and its possibilities. On the heels of the COVID-19 pandemic, much of the industry is hopeful for recovery, but there are multiple roadblocks still creating challenges. While the struggles with materials prices, data points and supply chain issues all continue to wax and wane, there are optimistic signs on the horizon.
With the passage of the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA), many contractors are keeping a keen eye on how the increased public spending may impact bidding processes, potential for new projects and perhaps even existing contracts across the country. Read more…

(AGC SmartBrief) The US is expected to retain its current share of 13% of global construction as the worldwide growth pace rises 2.3% annually in real terms through 2030, according to a forecast from London-based Global Construction Perspectives. GCP looked at the post-pandemic prospects for 112 markets globally and noted that some of the fastest growth is expected across Asia, although China's dominating share is likely to decline 3% to 32.6%.
