Workforce development discussed at Southern District's Sept. 14 Centennial Celebration Register today!
Let’s face facts. The construction industry nationwide has a workforce-development problem and it is our number-one issue moving forward. Older workers are aging out and it is challenging to entice younger workers into our industry. Several other industries are facing the same problem.
Come learn what the AGC is doing about it locally. Our speakers are the AGC Education Foundation’s own Workforce Development Director Sarah Patterson and Education and Training Director Dan Morris. These folks live and breathe workforce development and have great information to share!
AGC of Washington came into existence in 1922. In celebration of the AGC Centennial and because of our generous sponsor Executech, we are cutting the price of dinner in half to $25 per person. Learn more about Executech here. As always, we will have an open bar as well. We will have some Southern District artifacts at the meeting that date back 80 years! As always, we'll be at Tacoma Country and Golf Club on Sept. 14 with a 5:00 pm Social Hour and 6:00 pm dinner.
Register here today (deadline is Sept. 12 at noon) and don’t miss this Centennial event!

Strategies to elevate your brand discussed
at Oct. 5 dinner meeting

Your company’s brand is a reflection of its people, product and overall performance. How a brand is perceived relates directly to the price customers will pay for services and their loyalty to one brand over another. Taking small but consistent steps to elevate your firm’s brand can be a real differentiator – and even an "unfair" advantage.
Wendy Simmons is the founding principal of Middle of Six, a marketing consultancy dedicated to the architecture, engineering, and construction (A/E/C) industry. She is trusted by regional and international general contractors to advise on and implement marketing strategies specific to their unique goals. Wendy will share several tangible tips to strengthen your firm's brand in an increasingly competitive market.

AGC sees success with State Building Code Council
The State Building Code Council (SBCC) is white-hot with activity as Governor Inslee and his allies in the environmental community attempt to get negative proposals passed at the Council.
The Governor failed in attempts to pass these negative proposals (that the AGC testified against) in the Legislature and is now moving to get them passed at the SBCC instead. The AGC was successful in defeating the effort at the SBCC to get Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) into the building code recently. The EPD proposal would have forced contractors to report to local building departments how much CO2 was produced in the manufacture of the materials they use during construction. Steel and concrete were specifically targeted, but other materials could have been added. This proposal has been viewed as a paperwork nightmare for contractors and mandate that should not fall on the construction industry.
In addition, the AGC is part of a large coalition (business, building trades and natural-gas companies) that is fighting a ban on natural gas in new commercial and residential construction. This is a long-term battle at the SBCC. Again, this a proposal that Inslee and the environmental community saw defeated in the legislature but are trying to resurrect at the SBCC.
2023 Pierce County Construction Career Day
Planning for the 2023 Pierce County Construction Career Day has already started. For those who don’t know, AGC, the building trades, WorkForce Central, local governments, homebuilders, the tribal community and others raise just under $50k each year and produce an annual event at the Puyallup Fairgrounds that introduces 2,000 local high-school students to the construction industry.
These students have already shown an interest in the trades and are treated to a day of using actual construction equipment. Fifty vendor booths are set-up and the middle-class wages that construction workers earn are discussed.
