TOMORROW Culture of CARE Fall Forum: Back to Basics
Resources and conversation to advance diversity & inclusion
This fall, our Culture of CARE Forum will get back to basics by answering the biggest questions: Why does AGC of Washington and AGC of America provide support for members who are striving to improve workforce diversity and inclusion culture in their firms? Why are there increasing numbers of construction firms making diversity & inclusion initiatives a part of their strategic-growth models? And beyond the why, we'll dive into what we offer in terms of supportive resources to help firms with their D & I journey, and how you can stay up-to-date with industry best practices as you grow your business.
No matter how long you’ve been involved with Culture of CARE, we encourage you to join us on tomorrow, October 28 from 10:00 a.m. to noon. This meeting will be held online Microsoft Teams.

Steel, roofing-materials shortage hamstrings construction
(Construction Dive)  Mounting shortages and rising costs have left contractors in some cases delaying projects or using substitute materials when possible.
Steel, roofing and insulation materials are some of the most difficult products to get right now, said Ken Simonson, chief economist at the AGC of America. Bar joists, used to frame roofs, can have lead times of anywhere from ten to fourteen months.
Costs have also soared, with the index for steelmill products rising 123% YoY in August, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics' Producer Price Index. Copper and brass mill shapes jumped 45.3% YoY, while plastic construction products saw increases of just under 30% YoY. Read more...
Four steps to addressing the skilled-labor shortage
(Construction Dive) "Good jobs at good wages" is not just a political slogan. The electrical industry is making good on this ambitious promise today. Solid careers with promising, sky-is-the-limit futures for smart, hardworking professionals are available right now -- no costly college degree required.
Given this, how do we explain the chronic shortage of skilled electricians and other tradespeople? More importantly, how do we address this shortage, both for the benefit of our businesses and the economy at large?
One reason for the shortage of licensed electricians is demand. Employment of electricians is projected to grow 8% from 2019 to 2029, much faster than the average for all occupations, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Other professional trades are also expected to grow, but not as dramatically. Read more…
Diversifying construction could help worker shortage
(Finance & Commerce) The Biden administration estimates that if the $1-trillion bipartisan infrastructure bill passes, it could add 2 million jobs per year over a decade -- but those jobs, mostly in construction, may be difficult to fill in an industry that is already experiencing labor shortages, with 321,000 unfilled jobs in July.
One way that some industry leaders see to address the scarcity of skilled workers: diversify the industry. Nearly 90% of the 10.8 million people employed by the construction industry are white, and just 11% are women, according to the Department of Labor. Despite efforts in recent decades to make the industry more inclusive, and some progress, a long history of exclusionary hiring practices and informal recruitment networks has blocked some groups from opportunities.
