Washington’s version of "shelter-in-place:"
What it means for the construction industry

On the evening of March 23, 2020, Governor Jay Inslee issued a "Stay Home, Stay Safe" order. Governor Inslee advised residents they must stay home unless they are "pursuing an essential activity." A fourteen-page memorandum advises what qualifies as essential industries, including the obvious sectors of health care, public health and emergency services. Those in "public works" – including "construction of critical or strategic infrastructure," as well as dams, locks, levees, bridges, waters, sewer mains and those in the construction industry related to provision of safety and sanitation (such as plumbers and electricians) – are also deemed "essential." Construction: an essential industry
Tell President Trump and Congress to treat the construction industry and the work it performs as vital and essential to the critical industries that must remain in operation to respond to this pandemic and crises to come. To ensure this is the case, the federal government must issue guidance classifying construction as a Critical Infrastructure Industry whose workers are essential.

Adoption of 2018 construction code delayed

The Seattle Department of Construction Inspections is in the process of updating the city's construction codes to the 2018 versions of the building, residential, existing buildings, mechanical, energy, fuel gas and plumbing codes. The department had been aiming for an effective date of July 1, 2020 to align with the effective date of Washington State building codes. However, due to many factors, including the impacts of COVID-19, the effective date of Seattle’s codes will be delayed until November 1, 2020. If the 2018 Washington State construction codes effective date is delayed past November 1, the effective date of city codes will be aligned with the State's. Read more…
